"A hopeless future would be faced by people without children; a country without trees is almost as helpless; forests that are so used that they can not renew themselves will soon disappear, and all their advantages with them."

Back in 1893, when states were relatively new bodies, a Congress of Women at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago proposed a "National Garland of Flowers" consisting of flowers for each state. This grew into formal designations of flowers by state legislatures. The definition caught fire, causing birds, trees, fish, food, and much more to become official.
