Every year, US businesses use a lot of paper, consuming more than 5.2 million tonnes in 2010. And all that paper must go somewhere in file cabinets, in the mail, to billing firms or out to customers.

Therefore it comes as no surprise that document management for many companies is an expensive operation, as companies with 10 locations alone accumulate shipping costs of more than $10,000 a year.
Managing paper records, from manual work to compensation for lost documents, is typically both time-consuming and expensive. On average, companies pay $20 in labor to file each document, and 80% of those papers are never looked at again.

Considering the technology that exists today, file cabinets and document storage account for more than half of the office space in the United States. An average employee uses about 10,000 pieces of paper a year more than 1,400 of which are not even required.
