The security of global gas supplies continues to increase with additions to proven reserves, output outpacing consumption and growing demand for liquefied natural gas and coal-to-gas switching in the power sector.

In 2019, natural gas accounted for 24.2% of primary energy consumption worldwide. Natural gas is the main fuel in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), while oil tends to be dominant in Africa, Europe and the Americas.

Asia Pacific is the world's largest consumption area of gas supplies and in fact, almost half of its primary energy is generated from coal. Oil and gas generating nations are the highest per capita natural gas consumers.
