As valuable as they are, we are not born with the skills that allow us to manage impulses, make plans, and remain centered. We are born with the potential to develop these capacities or not, depending on our experiences in infancy, through childhood and into adolescence. Our genes provide the blueprint, but the early environments in which children live leave a lasting signature on those genes.

This signature affects how or not the genetic potential in the brain circuits underlying the executive function capabilities on which children can rely is expressed throughout their lives. These skills are acquired in practice and reinforced by the experiences in which they are applied and honed.

It is one of society's most significant responsibilities to provide the assistance that children need to learn these skills at home, in child care and preschool programs, and in other settings they often experience.
