In 2015 , the United Nations expected that by the end of the century, the global population would reach 11 billion.
The UN updated these numbers last year, but the figures it had come up with were still well above 10 billion. Until now, these daily predictions from the UN have been the status quo.
There have been several indicators that there is a population plateau, but recent research published in The Lancet by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) indicates that the number of people on this planet may eventually begin to shrink well before the year 2100.
