For Paris, we'll have a Plan B. If we don't have a vaccine yet, next year's plans will change as well.

I've learned a lot about planning this year. Two things in my mind stand out in particular.

There are benefits out there. To take advantage of them, however, you have to be well-positioned, or you can lose out on the recovery.

I immediately pivoted and switched my focus to redoing my website and securing a book deal when we went into lockdown back in March. It would take a fair bit of energy for both ventures, but I knew I had to plant seeds for the future.

I was faced with the challenge of thinking deeply about what I wanted my practice to look like post-pandemic while updating my website, and what would help my clients most. I 'm happy I've wisely spent my time, as I'm ready in 2021 and beyond for whatever comes my way.

How about thee?

Now is the time to think about the future — if you want to be as good (or better) next year than in 2020.

Not only has COVID-19 changed the workplace, the complexion of the workers, the profession itself, and how we look for talent have possibly changed forever.

This week, my husband, Ron, and I both celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary. We will usually have a huge celebration. Take a trip abroad, or at least dine at one of our favorite restaurants.

It's anything but normal this year.

So, you can imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning and found a card in our espresso machine waiting for me, with a note on the inside reading,

"Good anniversary. In 2021, let's go to Paris! Many of you who are acquainted with me know well that I am a planner.

Without a ride on the calendar, a year won't pass for me. Before this year, that is.

2020 has been difficult for our planners.

At a new restaurant in our neighborhood, I made dinner reservations for our anniversary and hoped to dine outside. Mother nature had other ideas, as since 5:00 AM it has been raining. We'll be dining at 'Chez Matuson,' instead.

We're going to go to plan B when the weather clears, which is lunch outside in Provincetown, MA.

In particular, the notion of "Unconstrained Talent" is one thing that will have an enduring effect on organizations.

The position of talent is no longer restricted geographically.

The standard has become remote job, which means creativity knows no boundaries. Consequently:

The market for top talent has fundamentally changed. Companies need to double down on their recruiting strategies, or with a lot of unanticipated work opportunities, they may soon find themselves.

In the past, workers might have stayed with you because, no matter how tempting a new opportunity may have been, they were not able to uproot their families. You're more at risk of poaching your employees now that corporations are coming around to the idea that people can work from home.

Diversifying the staff is better. You are no longer limited by local demographics.

Organizations need to diversify to stay competitive in today's global environment. A diverse workforce 's advantages go beyond political correctness. Involving people of diverse experiences and viewpoints can lead to better decision-making, greater creativity, and greater involvement in the workplace. It will also boost the prestige of a business and make it easier to recruit top talent.

It has been a struggle to hire diverse workers in certain parts of the country. This is no longer the case. Your oyster is the universe! For different candidates, dive in and extend your search country-wide (or even globally).

There are expanding opportunities to recruit lower-cost expertise. We're seeing it happening with tech firms right now. Employees who voluntarily migrate to areas of the country where living costs are considered low are having their wages adjusted downwards to reflect local living conditions.

Many businesses are aggressively pursuing staff who live in locations where pay scales are considerably smaller than places like New York , San Francisco, or Boston, with employees no longer having to report to the workplace.

So, what does this all mean to you?
