Did you know there's more than 7,000 different languages around the world? All this huge number of languages can be traced back to just 11 ancient languages. One is Indo-European, splitting over time into different languages such as Germanic, Hellenic, and Balto-Slavic. Such sub-languages have continued to branch out throughout history, and eventually became what we now know as German, Hindi and Russian.

Even English, which is currently the world's most frequently spoken language, has been found to have origin in what was once Germanic. Other Germanic-born languages which are commonly spoken include Dutch, Afrikaans, Swedish, and Bavarian. As reported earlier, with more than 1.13 billion English speakers, 379 million of whom are native speakers, English has been listed as the most-spoken language in the world. Take a trip through language history with this infographic, which ranks among the 100 most commonly spoken languages in the world, and trace the origins of your own language back to its origin.
