For all the cars produced worldwide in 2019, nearly one in three – or 32 per cent – came from China. As seen in figures by the OICA association of automobile manufacturers, the world produces fewer cars than it did in 2014, but some Asian markets have still managed to increase their production volumes.

India experienced one of the largest rises – nearly 15 percent to 3.6 million cars annually in five years. The biggest drop in production affected the ailing U.S. auto industry, which between 2014 and 2019 lost 40 per cent of its domestic revenue.

Germany also produces fewer cars at home, but German manufacturers such as Volkswagen are a part of China's growing growth. The Chinese market accounted for around 39 per cent of the overall sales of Volkswagen in 2019. Shifting production locations are only one aspect of the automotive industry 's internationalization. Know-how often migrates with production, with existing manufacturers entering into joint ventures with Chinese or other Asian firms, which usually require technology transfer.
