Unfortunately pedestrian accidents are on the rise. The Governors Highway Safety Administration has reported that in 2019 there were 6590 pedestrian deaths, an improvement of 5 percent over the estimates for 2018. That is an increase in deaths by 60 percent since 2009.

Nearly half of pedestrian deaths involved dangerous driving habits, such as speed, distracted and drowsy driving, and alcohol impairment by the driver and/or pedestrian. Other important factors include talking and texting on cell phones, eating while driving, programming a GPS, putting on makeup and other behaviors that take away the driver's eyes from the road.
