Many countries have made significant progress in reducing SOX emissions; EEA-33 SOX emissions decreased by 74 per cent between 1990 and 2011. Emissions were lower in all EEA-33 countries compared with 1990 in 2011, with the exception of Iceland (3.8 times higher) and Turkey (52% higher).

The significant increase in SOX emissions in Iceland, from 21 kt in 1990 to 81 kt in 2011, is primarily attributed to the recorded emissions from the 'Power Production and Distribution' sector, which increased by 51 kt from 1990. This industry alone contributed 79 per cent of Iceland 's overall emissions in 2011 already. Such emissions primarily consist of fugitive emissions from the 'other energy production' market.
