Several studies have found that the risk of extreme Covid-19 contracting which may result in hospitalization, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation or death rises with age, as well as the existence of underlying health conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) recently published a survey in the United States showing that a large proportion of the American population has some sort of underlying health problem, putting them at risk from serious types of the virus. The findings of the study are based on the 2018 BRFSS and US Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Data from the population census and it determined that 40.7 percent of U.S. adults (aged 18 and over) have a pre-existing state of health.

The most common disease in the report is obesity, affecting just over 30 per cent of Americans, followed by diabetes that has an 11.2 per cent national prevalence. The prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD) and cardiovascular disease is just under 7 per cent, while chronic kidney disease is around 3 per cent. The CDC stated that "while the estimated number of people with any underlying medical condition was higher in densely populated metropolitan areas, overall prevalence in non-metropolitan rural areas" It also added that "the counties with the highest prevalence of any disorder were concentrated in Southeastern states, notably Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana , Mississippi, Tennessee, and West Virginia, as well as some counties in Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and northern Michigan, among others."
