1930s: First effect was built into the Vibrola Spanish Guitar by Rickenbacker. To change pitch it used a motorized pulley system, making the first floating tremolo bridge.

1940s: guitarists DIY-ed early effects, but most of them were only possible in the studio.

Les Paul had reel-to-reel tape modified to create echo effects.
Duane Eddy built a reverb / echo studio chamber with a 500 gallon water tank equipped with a microphone and speaker.
