The e-cigarette is a system operated by batteries that heats the e-liquid into an aerosol, or "vapor." The e-liquid comprises a combination of chemicals, artificial flavorings, and nicotine normally contained in a bottle or capsule. Many cartridges can be refillable while others can be replaced by unused ones. Such apps are taking on many shapes and colours. Some are designed to look like cigarettes or cigars, or even a flash drive with USB.

Vaping describes how the aerosolized e-liquid is inhaled using a device. The heated aerosol chemicals produce a thick fog-like cloud that looks like cigarette smoke. The properties of the e-liquid chemicals change when heated. When inhaled, the aerosol particles will damage the lining of the lungs. Inhaled nicotine from an e-cigarette is just as addictive as conventional cigarettes.
