The State of the Side Hustle #infographic

We asked digital content creators — writers, podcasters and video makers — to share how they make money in our State of the Side Hustle survey.

Here are the highlights:

For employers, the hammer is about to drop: 40 percent of the creators we surveyed have a day job, and 73 percent plan to quit becoming a full time creator. Of those creators planning to quit their jobs, 44 percent are planning to leave within the next 12 months.

Digital products (70 percent), consulting and freelancing (49 percent), and ads, sponsors or donations (15 percent) are the most common channels for monetization.

For 41 percent of producers, consulting and freelancing is the highest-earning channel, while 30 percent list digital products as their highest-earned channel.

But that will change, as 73 percent of creators plan to increase how much they directly sell products to their audience. Meanwhile, 37 per cent of creators intend to lower how much they monetize by consulting & freelancing, and 39 per cent intend to lower how much they monetize by third parties such as advertisers, sponsors and affiliate partners.
