Computer malfunction occurs. It can hobble your productivity, your business and leave a hole in your digital memory by losing important data.

While many are now performing their work and playing on far-flung servers (we store our messages in Gmail and keep our family photos on Facebook), critical files are likely to be unrecoverable on your PC or smartphone if hardware fails.

Seagate and Harris Interactive conducted a survey of 2,205 adults in the U.S. — 90% of whom thought their digital content was worthwhile. Yet 30 per cent of surveyed women don't back up their files at all. That is compared to 19 percent of men never backed up. Only 10 per cent of adults surveyed their files back up daily.

And given the prevalence of cloud storage services such as DropBox and Carbonite, they are still used by 8 per cent of respondents, preferring external hard drives and USB flash drives.
