In 1987, Lester Walker published "Tiny Houses: Or How to Get Away from It All," featuring photographs and mini-home drawings, such as a prefab house with 192 square feet.

Promoting the benefits of tiny living gained traction from the mid-90s to the beginning of 2000s. Jay Shafer formed Tumbleweed Tiny House Company in 1999, the first company in the United States to sell mobile mini homes.

The enthusiasts published other books and blogs. In 2007, Kent Griswald founded the first tiny house blog offering design and building options to simplify and downsize homes.

Today, through the efforts of groups like the American Tiny House Association (ATHA) and the Tiny Home Industry Association (THIA), living in tiny homes is made possible more.

The mission of ATHA is to help tiny house enthusiasts as part of a more sustainable and self-reliant lifestyle searching for innovative and affordable homes. At the other hand, the mission of THIA is to unify a movement by establishing standards and promoting best practices as acceptable and permanent housing in the design, placement and widespread use of small homes. They envisage a future where people can choose from a wider variety of cultural, ecologically responsible, secure and sustainable housing solutions.
