Today's visualization is based on a definition from S&P Dow Jones Indices showing the percentage of U.S.-based companies in global industries and sectors as of December 31 , 2019. In the S&P Global Broad Market Index (BMI), an index which measures more than 11,000 stocks across 50 developed and emerging economies, the figures show the companies ' market capitalisation.

Such indexes combine securities from different regions with a view to monitoring market performance worldwide. Yet while the number of securities across countries may well be quite diversified, a dollar perspective tells another story. With market capitalisation in mind, country weightings can become much more unbalanced.
