Although COVID-19 dominates news, yet another form of emergency threatens the lives of millions of people worldwide — food insecurity.

However, the two are very much intertwined. By the end of 2020, officials predict that over 265 million people will be on the verge of hunger worldwide, almost doubling the existing rate of food poverty at a crisis point.

Today's visualizations use data from the fourth annual Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC 2020) to show the growing scale of the current situation, as well as its intense concentration in just 55 countries around the globe.

Another difficult spot in the Middle East is Afghanistan, where 11.3 million people in a precarious state of acute food scarcity find themselves. Between January and March 2020 more than 138,000 refugees returned to the country from Iran and Pakistan, placing a strain on food supplies.

More than half (51%) of Pakistan 's population analyzed are also faced with acute food insecurity, the highest in Asia. Extreme weather conditions such as under-average moonsoon rains have exacerbated these numbers.
