To be honest, it is very surprising that not every square foot of the planet is paved with plastic. Research has estimated that 6,300 metric tons of waste have been created by humans since 1950, of which only 9% have been recycled. The same study estimates that if the trends in waste management continue at this staggering pace, it would double the amount of waste by 2050. Scientists contend, too, that plastics are extremely likely not to break down.

It shows only one thing, no matter how you view the current picture: Earth is suffocated with plastic. CitiGPS 'study estimated that single-use plastic bottles represent 15 per cent of ocean waste. The biggest plastics problem is that they don't break down. It takes about 500 years for plastics to degrade into smaller parts called microplastics.
