Hepatitis A is a hepatitis A virus (HAV) disease occurring in the liver. The virus spreads primarily when an uninfected (and unvaccinated) individual ingests food or water tainted with the feces of an infected person. The disease is closely associated with unhealthy food or water, lack of sanitation, poor personal hygiene and oral-anal sex.

Like hepatitis B and C, hepatitis A does not cause chronic liver disease and is seldom lethal, but may result in debilitating symptoms and fulminating hepatitis (acute liver failure), which is frequently lethal. Overall, in 2016, the WHO estimated that 7,134 people died of hepatitis A worldwide (representing 0.5 per cent of viral hepatitis deaths).
