Literacy in any language is one of the most important and fundamental instruments required to succeed in any modern society. Most communication nowadays takes the form of writing, and unfortunately, if a person is unable to read or write, the knowledge can not be accessed.

In spite of this, illiteracy is one of the biggest social problems of the 21st century, impacting millions of people around the world. Because of financial and cultural constraints, and a growing number of child laborers, children, especially girls, have no opportunity to get any kind of schooling, and move to illiteracy through the generations.

If we think of people who are illiterate, we think of people raised in third world countries, or of people belonging to disenfranchised minorities. This infographic does, however, provide an overview of the classes with the lowest literacy skills in American English language. What is worthy of note is that among the other racial groups, the largest number of people with poor English literacy skills are the country-born White Americans.

Such figures are based on PIAAC literacy skills and classify people between the ages of 16 and 65. This type of research not only benefits social scientists and policymakers but also helps to make clear the general public's views about certain racial issues
