In the history of directing there were many people to whom fictional and non-fiction films owe great achievements, even foreign ones. Women started producing fantastic movies in the 1910s and after half a century they dominated the industry entirely. This occupation remains historically masculine although there are more and more exceptions: for example, Lena Dunham and Julia Lee were newly added to this list.

We've picked ten female directors from around the world who can be very respectful to outsiders and we're telling you which movies they should be paying attention to first. Looking at the results of the regional BBC Culture study, one thing is most interesting. 209 Readers posted their rankings of the best ten foreign language movies. Of those respondents, 94 were women, that is, 45 percent, and yet only 4 were female directors in the top 100: Chantal Ackerman(' Jeanne Dilman, Commerce Embankment 23, Brussels 1080'), Claire Denis(' Good Work'), Agnes Varda(' Cleo 5 to 7') and Katya Lund(' City of God'').

In the top 100-7 films there were more male-made films called Jean than female films. This disturbing result puts the current conversation about the lack of female filmmakers in a broader context: women run the risk of being removed from their heritage because they are deprived of the opportunity to engage in the cinema in their art.
