Although women make up half of the population, women are still rare in management roles, and in the entertainment industry this is no different. A research conducted under the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative(Aii) of the University of Southern California found that women directed only four of the top 100 grossing films in 2018.

At the panel "Make the (In)visible: Data-Driven Era Radical Transparency," Jan. 25, organized with the Aii at Sundance and moderated by Aii ceo Stacy Smith, actress Tessa Thompson officially introduced the "#TIMESUPX2 TIME'S UP 4% Challenge" to address the gap. The project involves entertainment people to "announce their commitment to[ working]in the next 18 months with a female film director." This effort was made publicly by dozens of people in front of and behind the camera, as well as seven major studios including Warner Bros and MGM.
