America is one of the world's most popular destinations for students looking to earn higher education overseas. American universities and colleges are among the nation's top rankings, and the student community is also a big advocate on graduate preference.

During the 2018/19 academic year, 1,095,299 international students were enrolled in American higher education institutes, according to the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange released by IIE. It is the fourth consecutive year of an increase in the number of international students by more than a million. That is a big boost for the economy.

Given its current strained political relationships with the US, the greatest number of international students in American colleges and universities were from China, with 369,548 taking part in undergraduate, intermediate, and other non-degree programmes. The data is very insightful and demonstrates that they remain ever-popular with students worldwide, given the increasing tuition fees of American higher education institutions.

One point to note remains that half of all foreign American students take part in the STEM fields. Many of these students either stay and help to develop the economy of the country, or return to their own and work in their respective fields.
