While many animals are still facing threats of extinction, the actions taken by conservation groups and local governments have helped reverse this trend for some species and even turn it around for others. Due to the 1973 Endangered Species Act, 85% of the animals and plants under its protection are now on their way to recovery!

It chart looks closer at 26 of the species that were brought back from the brink of extinction. It explores what caused them to become extinct, the low numbers they obtained during this time, and the reasons behind the recovery of their species.

Even the Americans. National Symbol, the bald eagle, became almost extinct during the 1940s due to habitat loss, illegal shooting and pesticide use. Due to the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, this vital emblem of our nation's numbers has recovered enough to be eliminated from the almost extinction list in 2007.
