1776 is the best-selling piece of narrative history by respected historian David McCullough. McCullough was passionate about the 18th during his previous book, biography of John Adams, and became the subject of his next project in the year that shaped America's fight for independence.

McCullough turns the reader's attention away from discussions at the Philadelphia Continental Congress and from the signing by the Rogtag Army of Citizen Soldiers of the Declaration of Independence on the trials under General George Washington.

The argument of the book is simple: without Washington and his Continental Army's perseverance during the struggles of 1776, the Declaration of Independence would have amounted to little more than a beautifully worded text, with no material consequences.
