On January 29, 1954, on an isolated farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi, Oprah Gail Winfrey was born to Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. Her name was supposed to be Bible orpha, but it was known as Oprah from birth because of the difficulties of orthodoxy and pronunciation. Winfrey's unmarried parents split up soon after her birth and left her for her mother's grandmother on the ranch.

As a baby, Winfrey was delighted by "play acting" in front of a farm animal, and she learned to read from her grandmother at the age of two and a half. Winfrey skipped the kindergarten after composing a note to the college's first day saying she belonged to the first grade. She was in the con as well.
